Network Rail figures show that, on average, five incidents involving large goods vehicles or passenger vehicles happen every day in the UK. These events are highly dangerous and can lead to significant financial and legal consequences for both operators and drivers. This course explains how to prevent bridge strikes and what steps to take if one happens.

Who is This Course For?
This course is aimed at HGV and PSV drivers, as well as operators responsible for heavy goods and passenger transport fleets who want to improve their understanding and awareness on the road.
Where an operator’s vehicle is involved in a bridge strike, they will typically be required to appear at a hearing or public inquiry before the Traffic Commissioner and may face regulatory sanctions against their Operator’s Licence. The operator can also be held liable for costs arising from the incident.
The driver involved may also be called before the Traffic Commissioner, with potential outcomes including the loss of their vocational entitlement and a disqualification of up to 6 months. In serious cases, particularly where there is a fatality or serious injury, the driver may face criminal proceedings, which could result in a fine or a custodial sentence.
What Will I Learn?
The course covers the following key areas:
By the end of the course, you will have a clear understanding of your responsibilities in preventing bridge strikes. You will know what checks to carry out before setting off, what to monitor while on route, how to interpret relevant traffic signs, and the correct actions to take if a bridge strike occurs.
